IBM ThinkPad Power On Password Removal

Email support@nortek.on.ca for details

An IBM ThinkPad Power On Password resides in the CMOS memory on the motherboard. This password can usually be reset by shorting jumpers and/or removing a battery powering the CMOS memory. IBM ThinkPad Power On password removal instructions can usually be found in a system's hardware maintenance manual. Please be aware that the service techniques listed in these manuals are for Qualified IBM Technicians. Servicing your system yourself may void manufacturer warranties.

IBM ThinkPad Supervisor Password Removal

Email support@nortek.on.ca for details

An IBM ThinkPad Supervisor Password resides on the planar (motherboard) / CPU card in an area of memory that, by definition, is not erased by power cycling*.

IBM ThinkPad Supervisor Password Removal is $95 US

Nortek has developed proprietary hardware and software that is capable of removing an unknown IBM ThinkPad Supervisor Password (without replacing any system components).

If Power On Password removal has been attempted using the details outlined in the ThinkPad's hardware maintenance manual, and the system still prompts the user for a password at startup or upon entering the BIOS settings, the system most likely has a supervisor password set. An unknown supervisor password cannot be removed by Power On password removal techniques.

If you require our IBM ThinkPad Supervisor Password removal services, please note that we require the entire system for service (ThinkPad A/C adapter not necessary). Our Engineering Department also performs comprehensive system testing once the password protection is removed to verify complete system integrity. Many of our customers ship their ThinkPad systems great distances and our additional testing sometimes uncovers a problem that can be rectified before returning the unit.

Please note that, depending on the ThinkPad model, the Hard Disk password can be automatically activated by the system when the Supervisor Password is set by the user. The Hard Disk Password is located on the drive itself. This password cannot be bypassed or removed by the user if unknown: access to the drive and stored data is impossible from any system if the hard disk drive is password protected. An unknown Hard Disk Password must be removed to regain use of the drive and access stored data.

Supervisor Password removal prices are based on operational IBM ThinkPads. Supervisor Password removal does not include Hard Disk Password removal. The $95 US does NOT include shipping costs. The customer is responsible for all incoming and return shipment costs (including any possible customs/duty fees). International customers: please note that there is an additional $17 US administration fee that covers the cost of the detailed customs paperwork involved with international shipments (click here for Shipping Information).

*In the case of the ThinkPad 365C/CS/CD/CSD/E/ED the Supervisor and the Power On Password reside in CMOS memory.
